It’s always a little embarrassing writing about one of your friends. Kev Nickells is one of our janitorial staff, and an occasional writer on this site. He’s also a gifted violinist and guitarist, playing under the name Hákarl, and in this video you get to see him play both. Despite having first met him a few years ago at Team Brick’s Wrong Weekend, and played with him several times since, this was the first time I’ve seen him give a solo performance. I was pretty blown away. Both pieces displayed confidence without seeming rehearsed, an ability to fully expand upon ideas that nevertheless seemed spontaneously generated and an awareness of continuity that never once gave the impression that Nickells knew exactly where he was headed at any given moment. Splendid behaviour.

The video was filmed on 27th October 2022 at the Komedia in Brighton, at an event promoted by the Spirit of Gravity in conjunction with our good selves. If you want to co-promote a show with Bang the Bore then email us at bangthebore (at) gmail (dot) com. We have a minibus based in Leeds, so we’ll squeeze in as many bands/musicians that are free and willing on the date concerned and drive to wherever you are. You find the venue, a decent PA, a place to crash if necessary and promote locally; we’ll amortize travel expenses between us, document as many bands as are willing and promote on this site. Any money raised gets split 50/50 between you and us. Shout if you want ‘owt.
