OPEN SUBMISSIONS – cover versions of Arthur Russell’s The Name of the Next Song, no longer than eight minutes, to cooke (dot) seth (at) gmail (dot) com by 1st January 2014.
Every Contact Leaves a Trace is a forthcoming CDr label run by Seth Cooke. The initial batch of releases will feature John Butcher, Gino Robair, Will Montgomery, Henry Collins, Dominic Lash and Ignacio Agrimbau and will be available from November. It is hoped that this compilation of covers of Arthur Russell’s The Name of the Next Song will be ready in time to feature in the label’s second batch of releases.
The Name of the Next Song is a puzzling bonus track first released on the 2004 Audika Records re-release of Arthur Russell’s World of Echo. Presented as a configuration of sub-songs, all based around permutations of the same music, and all with the same lyric, the song resists any easy interpretation.
Tracks must be no longer than eight minutes and must be submitted to cooke (dot) seth (at) gmail (dot) com by 1st January 2014. All tracks should be titled The Name of the Next Song and intended as cover versions, although lateral thinking, skewed reimaginings and sideways takes are encouraged – and in many ways, required. Not all versions submitted will be chosen for inclusion on the CDr; however, depending on the strength of submissions they may be published via another channel.
