Today is Chinese New Year: its the Year of the Rabbit, which has associations of calm and peace.
China is a country I’ve always found curious; my knowledge of it is pitiful, and part of my problem is that I feel that if I started to investigate it, I would never finish. It encompasses such a vast area, and so many peoples, that it stretches the notion of a “country” to its very limits.
Here is a fascinating documentary that details some of the intricacies of the Chinese state’s influence over culture and customs; as well as the attempts of minority groups to maintain their traditions, despite wholesale destruction (in some cases) in the recent past…
